What are Travel Teams?
In club volleyball, a travel team is a team of approximately 10-12 boys who practice together one, two, or three times per week (depending on the team's level) and compete in several tournaments per year. We have two levels: National Travel Teams and Regional Travel Teams.
National Travel Teams - Adidas/Black
National Travel Teams are our highest level of competitive teams. These teams compete in the full slate of regional tournaments (hosted by the SCVA, Southern California's governing body for club volleyball) as well as a handful of national tournaments held out of the state.
The season for our National Travel Teams (also called our Adidas and Black teams, ex: SMBC South 14 Adidas, SMBC South 15 Black) begins in mid-September for all age groups (following Club Tryouts the weekend after Labor Day). National Travel Teams practice 2-3 times per week. The season runs through the Junior National Championships in late June/early July; Nationals is a multi-day out-of-state travel tournament hosted by USA Volleyball (location changes annually).
Regional Travel Teams - Red
Regional Travel Teams are teams that only compete in those regional tournaments hosted by the SCVA, Southern California's governing body for club volleyball (tournaments held in Anaheim and Anaheim-adjacent areas). Regional teams do not attend national tournaments held out of the state.
The season for Regional Travel Teams (also called our Red teams, ex: SMBC South 14 Red) begins in mid-September for all age groups (following Club Tryouts the weekend after Labor Day). Red teams practices twice per week. The season runs through the middle of June for all age divisions.
Break for High School - 15's-18's Age Divisions
Teams competing in the 15's-18's age divisions take a break from the season from mid-January through mid-May to account for the high school boys volleyball season, which runs over that same span. 14's teams continue to practice and compete in tournaments.
