Rick Phillips – Director, SMBC Boys Volleyball Club
Rick Phillips is the Director of SMBC North Boys Volleyball and a proud lifelong resident of Santa Clarita. With deep roots in both education and athletics, Rick has been teaching at Valencia High School since 2004, where he currently serves as Co-Department Chair and teaches AP Environmental Science and Marine Studies. Prior to that, he taught at Highland High School from 2000 to 2003.
Rick brings a wealth of coaching experience to SMBC, having led both boys’ and girls’ programs at Canyon High School and Highland High School. He has also served as an assistant coach at College of the Canyons and coached club volleyball with Synergy.
As a player, Rick competed for Canyon High School from 1987 to 1990 and went on to play at Pierce College, where his team won the state championship in 1992.
A fun fact: Rick once appeared playing volleyball in an episode of Beverly Hills 90210. Off the court, his guilty pleasure is playing competitive cornhole.
Please feel free to contact Rick with any questions about the SMBC North program—he’s always eager to connect and support the local volleyball community. His contact information is listed below.

THE HISTORY OF SMBC BOYS
Established in 1982, SMBC Boys Volleyball Club is one of the longest-running, highly decorated, and most respected boys volleyball clubs in the country. SMBC Boys -- which began in Santa Monica, moved to the San Fernando Valley in the 1990's, and in recent years has expanded to multiple locations -- has left an indelible mark on the boys volleyball community.
SMBC Boys is the official Boys Program of LAVA and has multiple locations. The five SMBC Boys locations are: SMBC South (Encino), SMBC West (Thousand Oaks), SMBC VC (Camarillo), SMBC Shack (West Los Angeles), and SMBC North (Santa Clarita). Each location brings everything to the table one would expect given the historic successes of SMBC Boys — top coaching, structured training, and the superior values and ethics that are so very deeply LAVA.
With more than 50 medals won in national competition -- more than half of which have come at Junior Nationals -- SMBC Boys is a well-respected juggernaut with alumni scattered throughout the upper echelons of the collegiate men's volleyball ranks (125+ seniors over the past decade, playing at USC, Pepperdine, UCLA, UCSB, Irvine, Ohio State, Pacific, UCSD, CSUN, among others), including LAVA Co-Founder Trevor Julian who played for the club back in his playing days.
For nearly four decades SMBC Boys has been coaching the young male athletes of Los Angeles to exceptional heights.

In addition, our coaches understand the volleyball of this area and the volleyball of Southern California, and understand the strategies and systems required to be successful in a competitive environment. They also understand what it means to cultivate a team and strive to ensure the experience of our athletes is a positive one they will take with them, a rare trait in today’s club environment.
